Parkinson’s Disease: Spotting Symptoms & Preventative Measures

    What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s Disease is a gradually progressive disorder which results in the degeneration of neurons. Over time the condition worsens, affecting the control of movement, including speech and body language.

Parkinson’s Disease is more common than you think. It normally affects people over 60 years old. Therefore, it is critical to know how to spot its symptoms, as well as take preventative measures especially with Singapore’s ageing population.

Although its cause is still unknown and there is no cure to the disease, Parkinson’s Disease is not life threatening. Advances in medication and surgery have provided doctors and patients with better control over the disease.
Here is a brief summary of some statistics of the disease:

    Symptoms: Looking out for signs

Generally, symptoms develop slowly over years. The disease is so diverse that different people experience different symptoms at different times. Therefore, it is very important to be aware of the various possible early signs of the disease so the patient can get treated early.

Please see a doctor if you have any of the symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease.

    Prevention Measures

Because there is still no known cure for the condition, it is extremely important to prevent it before the symptoms arise. This is especially so because ageing is one of the most important risk factors to the disease.

Generally, a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise is the best way to prevent Parkinson’s Disease. It even helps to reduce the severity of the symptoms for those with the disease.
