Self-Care Tips for Seniors
The importance of self-care does not diminish as you age. It is always crucial to be intentional in looking out for your mental, physical, and emotional well-being before you transmit the good feelings to others!

When you are physically active, your body releases endorphins which leave you feeling happy. Spending time outdoors and enjoying nature also lifts your spirits and helps you sleep better.

Taking up hobbies can be enriching and gives you a sense of purpose.
Spend time with your loved ones over a meal, or organize a weekly phone call. You’d be surprised at how much you can give as well as benefit from staying connected!
Be thankful for the good and the bad. When you take time to appreciate the little blessings in life, you tend to become more optimistic and this in turn helps you to have more positive emotions.
Caregiving is not easy. When left unchecked, the combination of loss, prolonged stress and physical demands leaves you susceptible to various physical and mental health problems. Whenever you hesitate to look after yourself, ask yourself the following question:
“What good will I be to the person I care for if I become ill?”
Give yourself time to eat, sleep and relax. Make the conscious effort to exercise regularly.
Instead of engaging in negative self-talk, try to focus on what you can provide.Realise that you are doing the best you can, and let go of guilt. Personal barriers that can cause unnecessary anxiety, hence it is crucial to recognise the things that are beyond your control.
Avoid overexerting yourself. Make realistic goals and break them down into smaller action steps. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, especially when you begin to feel overwhelmed. Reaching out for help when you need it is a sign of personal strength!
Connect with other caregivers and share resources. Engage your family members and learn to accept help from others. It is important for you to share your feelings and struggles with someone you trust, as this will help to lighten your load.
Be self-aware and relax your mind.Journal your emotions, and identify sources of stress.
Take time off to pamper yourself and do things you enjoy once in a while.
