Walking Aids: Motorised Wheelchair or Mobility Scooter?

Posted by Amelia Dizon on

One common question people have while choosing a mobility aid is, 'Motorised wheelchair or mobility scooter? What's the difference? Which is better for me?'

As both have similar features in common, this article will help you understand the differences between these two mobility aids to determine which one will be more suitable for your needs.

Mobility scooters

Generally, scooters can come in many forms: the 3 wheeled, the 4-wheel and compact portable mobility scooter. Mobility scooter is that it comes in many variety of styles that look more aesthetically pleasant when compared to wheelchairs.

A 3-wheeled mobility scooter has a tighter turning radius and provides more spaces for longer legs for comfort whereas the 4-wheeled scooter provides more stability as there is an additional wheel. The compact scooter is more portable as it can be folded to fit into car trunks and easier to check in for travelling.

Motorised wheelchairs

The main difference between a motorised wheelchair and a mobility scooter is its controls. A motorised wheelchair is usually operated by a single joystick as compared steering handles on a mobility scooter. As such, motorised wheelchairs are more suitable for those with more limited upper body strength. There is also more ample back support on a motorised wheelchair as they are also designed to ensure comfort for the user for a longer periods of use.

As with mobility scooters, most motorised wheelchairs are very heavy. However, there are portable models which weigh significantly less than their non-portable counterparts. There are also models which allow you to disengage the motor to self-propel.

In order to make a decision on whether motorised wheelchairs or mobility scooters are more suitable, consider which features are the most important to you, e.g. budget, controls, portability, etc. This will help you narrow down your choices.
