What's Independent Living?

Posted by Vanessa Keng on

We've pretty much heard the same stuff over and over again in recent years - long waiting lines for nursing homes, impending Silver Tsunami with 1 in 5 Singaporeans aged above 65 by 2030, rush for hospitals to keep up with demand, the list goes on. But with all these, there's also a growing preference for seniors to age in the comfort of their own homes

What we at The Golden Concepts™ envision is for seniors to embrace the concept of Independent Living - to enable them to age in the comfort of their own homes, independently and safely. There is no point in just telling people the benefits of ageing-in-place; we need to provide an appropriate environment with suitable products and services to support this concept.

In the upcoming month, we'll be looking at introducing a whole new unique range of products to complement our existing gifts collection to provide Singaporeans with products which will enable seniors to maximize their independence while ensuring their safety - so do stay tuned for updates.

In addition, with every day of inactivity, seniors stand to lose 3-5% muscles mass. Rather than doing everything for them, we should be empowering them to do things on their own, adopting a mentality of "do what you can". Nothing best describes this better than a phrase I found online - "Rest equals to rust".

  • Vanessa, you articulated your point very well. If aging in one’s own community is the ideal scenario then the aging services industry and businesses need to develop an actual (coordinated) system that supports that enables seniors and their families the opportunity to realize this preference.

    Thanks for sharing,

  • Independent Living also includes individuals having the opportunities to make decisions that affect one’s life, and being able to pursue activities of one’s own choosing.
