Posted by Deborah Lee on

It is no surprise that a good posture is correlated to having good health. Your posture has a major impact on how you carry out your daily activities and gives others an overall impression of how you look and feel. A good posture is one that keeps your entire body in alignment and maintaining that alignment when you stand, sit, lie and walk so that you do not strain the supporting muscles and ligaments which help to maintain your posture during movement and weight-bearing activities.

Despite knowing the importance of maintaining a good posture, many people do not make a conscious effort to check on their posture every now and then or do not bother changing their bad posture habits as they have grown used to it.

In this article we will discuss:

  1. Consequences of having a poor posture
  2. Advantages of having a proper posture
  3. Tips on how to have a good posture

Consequences of having a poor posture

There are countless of individuals who suffer from the adverse effects due to having a poor posture but they do not make an effort to change their bad habits. Poor posture includes slouching, head tilting forward, potbelly, rounded shoulders and a hunchback. These bad habits could stem from factors such as having a sedentary lifestyle, poor ergonomic work-stations, stress, weak postural muscles, obesity, lack of knowledge on having a correct posture and poor core stability. Due to these bad habits, they can contribute to many health problems such as:

  • Breathing problems
  • Chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Muscle atrophy
  • Increased risk of falls in elderly
  • Headaches

If you are reading this and are worried about the impending health conditions you may get, no worries- it’s not too late to change your bad posture habits. By understanding what a good posture is, you can be made aware of your postural deviations and decide which corrective exercise would be most suitable to improve your current condition.

Advantages of having a proper posture

Signs of having a proper posture include straightening one’s shoulder, a balanced upright posture with a straight line from the ear to the shoulder to the hip and having one’s chin tucked in instead of tilting forward. Making a habit to ensure that your posture is in the right position from time to time will allow you to reap its benefits in the future! Good posture is essential as it helps to:

  • Prevent spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions
  • Prevent chronic back pain, muscular aches and joint stiffness
  • Decrease the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in arthritis
  • Prevent fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently
  • Exude confidence

Now that you are aware of the benefits of having a good posture, here are some tips to help you ensure that you maintain it!

Tips on having a good posture

  1. Exercise regularly

Doing exercises such as yoga or pilates are great in helping to maintain a good posture as they help to strengthen your body’s core muscles- the abdomen and pelvic area. These muscles are essential in forming the foundation of a good posture and also helps promote flexibility.

      2. Use lumbar cushions to support your lower back when sitting

When sitting down, one can be prone to slouching if their chair is not designed ergonomically. This problem can be fixed with the use of lumbar cushions which helps support one’s lower back when sitting down. Lumbar cushions help support the natural inward curve of the lower back, simply by filling in the gap between the lumbar spine and the seat. Lumbar cushions are available for sale at our store here! They are very portable and could be used whenever you are sitting down, anywhere.

     3. Ensure you are using proper bedding

Another important tip is to ensure that you are sleeping on proper bedding by ensuring that your mattress is firm, not too firm and not too soft. This is so that the spine gets proper support even during sleep.

     4. Usage of a balance wobble cushion

A balance wobble cushion can help improve one’s posture especially if the user has a sedentary lifestyle. The user can use it when sitting on their office chair as the balance wobble cushion helps promote tone and lean muscle, develop core muscles strength and stability and helps you sit in an upright position, thus reducing chronic back pain and joint stiffness.       5. Think of a string holding your body upright

The last tip is more on the creative side, which is to imagine a string on top of your head pulling you upwards towards the ceiling. This can help you visualize how to stand upright and it is a great way to challenge yourself to constantly maintain your posture be it while you are sitting or standing.

Does any of the above symptoms of a bad posture sounds familiar to you? If yes, it is time to keep your posture in check and take the necessary actions to correct them before it’s too late! Say bye to bad posture and hello to a confident and healthy looking you!
